  1. 1742-1806. French chemist who in 1790
  2. developed a process for making soda ash
  3. (sodium carbonate, Na2CO3) from common salt
  4. (sodium chloride, NaCl). In the Leblanc
  5. process, salt was first converted into sodium
  6. sulphate by the action of sulphuric acid,
  7. which was then roasted with chalk or
  8. limestone (calcium carbonate) and coal to
  9. produce a mixture of sodium carbonate and
  10. sulphide. The carbonate was leached out with
  11. water and the solution crystallized. Leblanc
  12. devised this method of producing soda ash
  13. (for use in making glass, paper, soap, and
  14. various other chemicals) to win a prize
  15. offered in 1775 by the French Academy of
  16. Sciences, but the Revolutionary government
  17. granted him only a patent (1791), which they
  18. seized along with his factory three years
  19. later. A broken man, Leblanc committed
  20. suicide.
